Bicycle & Scooter Accidents

Thanks to advocacy efforts across the country, the number of bicycles, scooters and electric scooters on American roads has increased substantially over the past decade.

As more riders are on the road, the likelihood of bicycle, scooter and/or electric scooter-related accidents increases. For the unprotected driver of a bicycle, moped, scooter or electric scooter, collisions that happen in the blink of an eye can have devastating lifelong consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were over 780 cyclist fatalities in the United States in 2017 due to motor vehicle accidents, and over 50,000 cyclist injuries in the same year.

According to Consumer Reports, about 1,500 people have been injured in e-scooter crashes in the U.S. since 2017. In addition to scooter riders, 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms for crash-related injuries in 2015, according to the CDC.

Injuries from bicycles, scooters, and electric scooters are increasingly common, and can be very serious. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2010 over 515,000 people were sent to hospital emergency rooms in the U.S. because of injuries from riding bicycles and scooters.

Head-on collisions make up a majority of bicycle, scooter and/or electric scooter accidents and are the most common and fatal type of bicycle, scooter and/or electric scooter crashes.

When a bicycle, scooter and/or electric scooter does happen, oftentimes serious injuries occur. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Head and/or brain injury;
  • Neck and/or spinal cord injury;
  • Back injury;
  • Nerve damage;
  • Loss of hands, feet, fingers and other limbs;
  • Paralysis; and/or
  • Death
