What to do Immediately Following a Car Accident

You’ve just been in an accident. Your heart is racing. You’ve broken out in a cold sweat.

You’re not sure whether you’re hurt or not, and everything you were ever taught about what to do has gone clear out of your head. The very first thing you need to do is take a deep breath and collect yourself so that you can act calmly and keep your wits about you. Once you’ve done that, following these steps will ensure that you’re in the best possible position and that you’ve protected your rights and the rights of others who may have been involved.

  • Stay where you are. Don’t ever leave the scene of an accident without following many or all of the steps below.
  • Make sure that everybody is safe and that the scene is protected. If somebody is hurt then call 911, and if you need to move your vehicle to the side of the road to ensure safety and the flow of traffic then do so, but if possible, leave everything untouched. Turn on all vehicles’ flashers and set up flares if you have the to protect the scene.
  • Call law enforcement. You want to have the authorities there to document the accident, regardless of whether anybody is hurt. A police report will be invaluable when you file a claim with your insurance company.
  • Document everything. Get the name, address and contact information of all other drivers, as well as their vehicle information and insurance information. Also collect information from all witnesses. Tell officers on the scene everything that you remember, without elaboration or speculation. Write down everything that you remember about what happened and take photos of the scene from all accidents, including pictures of stop signs, road hazards, damage to vehicles and more.
  • Get examined by a medical professional. Unless the accident was so minor that you’re absolutely certain you’ve suffered no injury, it’s a good idea to seek medical attention, as many injuries don’t show up until later and it’s important to have documentation.
  • Contact your insurance company as soon as possible and let them know what happened.
  • Stay organized by keeping all information related to your accident in one spot.

Following all of these steps will facilitate your ability to file a successful claim with your insurance company while protecting your rights in case you find yourself facing a challenge in getting the compensation that you need.
