On March 19, 2025, John Baldante and Gabriel Magee were featured in the New Jersey Monitor article “Seton Hall may be forced to stop hiding what it knows about sex abuse claims.” The article discusses Baldante & Rubenstein’s fight for the disclosure of Seton Hall University’s 2019 Latham report, which contains insight into hidden sexual abuse claims involving the school’s clergy. Baldante & Rubenstein represent approximately 125 plaintiffs in the Archdiocese of Newark litigation. That litigation includes Seton Hall University, which serves as the archdiocese’s crown jewel school.
“The Seton Hall lawyer said a couple times that they were entitled to keep this secret and privileged because they had a common interest with the Vatican in preventing child sex abuse,” Magee told reporters. “But the fact that they’re fighting so hard even today to keep it secret shows you that’s not true.”
“The Catholic Church has always suggested that sexual abuse is just an isolated, bad apple, and our argument in this litigation is it’s not just a bad apple. It’s an orchard,” explained Baldante. “How these institutions systemically and institutionally engaged in behavior to cover up and keep secret complaints and reports of sexual abuse [is] one of the major themes of our cases, and that’s what we’re going to hopefully prove when these cases come up for trial.”
