A landmark ruling against Johnson & Johnson over talc powder products

A landmark ruling was entered today by Freda L. Wolfson, United States Chief District Judge for New Jersey, in litigation pending in federal court against Johnson & Johnson filed by the plaintiffs, who are women nationwide who used Johnson & Johnson talc powder products and who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The plaintiffs contend that talcum powder causes ovarian cancer primarily because it contains traces of cancer causing asbestos and other heavy metals. Following a hearing that took place in July 2019 involving expert witnesses called on behalf of the plaintiffs and on behalf of defendant Johnson & Johnson, Chief Judge Wolfson ruled that the plaintiffs who developed ovarian cancer following perineal talc use may proceed to trial. The court placed limitations on the scope of the expert testimony from both sides, but the court ruled that these cases may proceed to trial.
